Free Community Panel Discussion on Revitalizing Youngstown to Take Place at Youngstown Playhouse

The City Club of Mahoning Valley will host a FREE candid and open community panel discussion with three national experts with extensive knowledge of Youngstown. Discussion will focus on what Youngstown must do to strengthen revitalization efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage with the panel during a 30 minute question and answer session. The doors will open on Tuesday, September 11 at 5pm for this FREE event and at 5:30pm Alan Mallach will hold a discussion on his new book The Divided City, Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America. At 6:30pm a panel discussion moderated by Ian Beniston, YNDC Executive Director will begin including: Evelyn Burnett, Co-Founder, Third Space Action Lab; Presley Gillespie, President, Neighborhood Allies; and Alan Mallach, national expert on urban development and author of The Divided City, Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America. Members of ACTION Attend City Council Committee to Press for Legislation Addressing Predatory Land Contracts

On Tuesday, August 28, members of ACTION and neighborhood leaders attended the Youngstown City Council’s Committee on Community Planning and Economic Development meeting at City Hall to press for a citywide adoption of an ordinance addressing predatory land contracts. Elder Rose Carter and Elder Craig Gilchrist spoke at the meeting to explain the dangers of predatory lending and illustrate how large, out-of-state companies like Vision Property Management and Harbor Portfolio prey on low-income and communities of color in Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Finance Fund Awards Predevelopment Grant to YNDC

Home Savings Charitable Foundation Awards $15,000 Grant to YNDC for Glenwood Business Center

On Tuesday, August 21, the Home Savings Charitable Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to YNDC for the creation of the Glenwood Business Center. The grant award funds will be used to renovate 2246 Glenwood Avenue, a vacant commercial building that will attract businesses to the Greater Glenwood Avenue Corridor on the south side of Youngstown. Housing Counseling client Amy Rogers and her family closed on their new home at 113 South Maryland on May 29, 2018. Amy sat down with us and talked about her experience going through YNDC’s free HUD-approved Housing Counseling program. Grove City College Volunteers Help Clean Up Vacant Lots on High Street

On Friday, August 17, 100 volunteers from Grove City College worked to clean up vacant lots on High Street near Glenwood Avenue. Volunteers reclaimed 865 linear feet of sidewalks and removed 20 cubic yards of brush, 7 cubic yards of debris, and 39 illegally-dumped tires. Read more.

Volunteers Clean Up Lots on High Street at Idora Neighborhood Workday

On Saturday, August 18, thirteen volunteers worked to clean up vacant lots on High Street near Glenwood Avenue at the Idora Neighborhood Workday. Volunteers from the Four Square Block Watch, Freedom Church, Hope for Renewal/Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and YSU Honors College reclaimed 432 linear feet of sidewalks and removed 30 cubic yards of brush. YSU Honors College Cleans Out 1720 Glenwood Avenue

On Saturday, August 25, forty-three volunteers from the YSU Honors College helped to clean out 1720 Glenwood Avenue. The volunteers removed 4 tires and 60 cubic yards of brush and debris from the inside and outside of the property. Read more.
